The Gate of Dawn and Our Lady of Mercy painting (early 17th century)
One of the most significant religious, historical and cultural monuments. Built on a the road to Medininkai in the early 16th century. It was initially called the Medininkai Gate. This is the first of the five defensive gates of Vilnius built together with the city wall. It is the only one to survive today. There is the chapel of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn Mother of Mercy inside the gate decorated with a Renaissance painting of the Virgin Mary painted in the early 17th century. The painting is covered in a silver gilt setting and is believed to be miraculous. Pope St. John Paul II prayed here in 1993 and Pope Francis in 2018, After praying in the chapel, the Pope consecrated the new gold crown of the Blessed Virgin Mary made from votive offerings.
